England 2010 World Cup squad finally announced

After a day of frantic Twitter activity produced more rumours than, well the last big thing to get football Twitterers going, we now have the official England squad for World Cup 2010.

Here’s the 23:

Robert Green
David James
Joe Hart

John Terry
Rio Ferdinand
Jamie Carragher
Stephen Warnock
Ledley King
Glen Johnson
Ashley Cole
Matthew Upson

Steven Gerrard
Frank Lampard
Gareth Barry
Joe Cole
Aaron Lennon
Michael Carrick
James Milner
Sean Wright-Phillips

Wayne Rooney
Peter Crouch
Emile Heskey
Jermain Defoe

19/23 is my score.

I didn’t expect Carrick, Warnock or Wright-Phillips to make the cut.

At one point I even thought Capello might take Bent but the Sunderland forward’s display against Japan put paid to that idea.

Glad Joe Cole is on the plane. He brings craft and guile to England’s play.

Adam Johnson will get his chance in time for Euro 2012.

As for Walcott, did anyone see that coming? I expected him to go as an ‘impact’ player. Capello obviously wants more than that.

Anyway, here’s the slightly matter of fact statement from the FA confirming what has been leaking out like a ruptured BP gas pipe since midday.
